Our Top Five Road Tripping Apps

Our Top Five Road Tripping Apps

We're sharing the top five road tripping apps we use when planning our trip, searching for out-of-this-world camp spots and how we find some secret squirrel tracks that aren't often on Google and Apple maps.

Let's be clear, none of these are sponsored. Shout out if you'd like to sponsor us. We just love sharing what makes our finding epic camping locations a dream.

Billy Goat Offroad

💰 Cost: Free
 Apple App: Yes, available here
📱 Android App: No, haven't found one

This road tripping app has full coverage across Australia and makes it super easy to pin locations you don't want to miss. I use the bad boy to add every hike, lookout, surf beach and camp spot that I'd be disappointed to miss. Anytime anyone tells me a spot, shares a pic on IG or drops a gem on a blog I add it to Billy Goat Offroad.

This app can be used without an internet connection and figures out the best route to your next spot. Including using some of those secret squirrel tracks, I talk about.

Hema

💰 Cost: $99.99 / one-time payment
 Apple App: Yes, available here
📱 Android App: Yes, available here

Hema Maps is your ultimate guide to every road, slip road, fire trail and then some. This road tripping app will also have real-timing tracking and tracklogs, allowing you to see the exact routes you took on your epic camping trip. This is a treat for those who love updating a wall map of all the places you've been.

Again, you can use this map offline, zoom in on your location and place your route to your next destination. Hema lets you share your tracklogs, which is great when sharing a cool route with a mate.

WikiCamps Australia

💰 Cost: $7.99 / one-time payment
 Apple App: Yes, available here
📱 Android App: Yes, available here

This road tripping app is our go-to when planning where to hang out for a couple of nights, finding showers and clean drinking water to refill our water tanks. WikiCamps shows you national park campgrounds, caravan parks, roadside stops, backpacker hostels and more. With an array of filters, it makes it easy to find dog-friendly sites when our furry friend tags along.

You can also plan your trip via the app and save your fave sites along the way. WikiCamps makes it easy to find free or national park rate campgrounds.

Hipcamp

💰 Cost: Free
 Apple App: Yes, available here
📱 Android App: Yes, available here

This is one of our fave road tripping apps to find secluded, unusual and fun campgrounds. Everything from family-friendly farm stays to vineyards and secluded riverside camps. There are some unique places to stay and often it's a family trying to earn extra cash to fund a dream project.

On average our Hipcamp stays have cost around $40 a night. I like to plan ahead and see if there are any epic camp spots worth spending the cash on. We've had some insanely beautiful spots using this app.

Fuel Map Australia

💰 Cost: Free
 Apple App: Yes, available here
📱 Android App: Yes, available here

Not just a road tripping app. Fuel Map shows you the fuel cost at any petrol station around Australia. We use this to save on fuel, to make sure we're using a reputable business that won't give us dud fuel (we've had that before) and to see how far the next petrol station is.

When you're road tripping up and down the east coast of Australia, it doesn't seem that important. However, when you're like us and taking desert tracks and heading off grid for days at a time, it's helpful to know what to expect.

These are our top five road tripping apps when travelling around Australia. Any other cool road tripping apps we should know about? Hit us up on IG or FB and let us know.

It's time to pack your road tripping essentials and hit the road!
